Summary

Bridgerton meets Poldark in this sweeping LGBTQIA+ Regency romance from award-winning author KJ Charles

Abandoned by his father as a small child, Sir Gareth Inglis has grown up prickly, cold, and well-used to disappointment。 Even so, he longs for a connection, falling headfirst into a passionate anonymous affair that's over almost as quickly as it began。 Bitter at the sudden rejection, Gareth has little time to lick his wounds: his father has died, leaving him the family title, a rambling manor on the remote Romney Marsh。。。and the den of cutthroats and thieves that make its intricate waterways their home。

Joss Doomsday has run the Doomsday smuggling clan since he was a boy。 His family is his life。。。which is why when the all-too-familiar new baronet testifies against Joss's sister for a hanging offense, Joss acts fast, blackmailing Gareth with the secret of their relationship to force him to recant。 Their reunion is anything but happy and the path forward everything but smooth, yet after the dust settles, neither can stay away。 It's a long road from there—full of danger and mysteries to be solved—yet somehow, along the way, this well-mannered gentleman may at last find true love with the least likely of scoundrels。

“I love you。 It’s stupid how I love you。 Baronet, for mercy’s sake。 I’ve got no business loving you, and I can’t seem to do a blessed thing else。”I enjoyed this so much。Gareth thought he'd never see the man who's company he was enjoying very much after he pushed him away and later regretted。 But when his father dies and now suddenly Gareth has inherited his father's home and everything else that comes with it he's about to meet him again but in the worst way possible since Gareth has managed “I love you。 It’s stupid how I love you。 Baronet, for mercy’s sake。 I’ve got no business loving you, and I can’t seem to do a blessed thing else。”I enjoyed this so much。Gareth thought he'd never see the man who's company he was enjoying very much after he pushed him away and later regretted。 But when his father dies and now suddenly Gareth has inherited his father's home and everything else that comes with it he's about to meet him again but in the worst way possible since Gareth has managed to be in the middle of a smuggling family's business and a smuggler who he is very familiar with。 London and Kent。 Gareth and Joss。 They were so lovely, even amidst the issues they faced, there was just something so soft and tender and quiet about them and their relationship。 There's plenty going on around them and to them, quite frankly that complicated things for them。 New family for Gareth that he never knew and trying to do right by them。 Smuggling business for Joss and all that entails。 Murder and meddling family。 Joss with his trying to take care of everything and everyone, Gareth with his abandonment issues thanks to his prick of a father and learning to stand up for himself。 Even amidst all of that, there was always something so precious about these two together, the relationship making them see what matters and evolving them, I guess。 They're just so lovely together。 There's also the doomsday family, even with their edges, I loved them, minus one or two of course。 But Luke and Asa especially? I loved them。 But there's a lot of family and found family here and standing up and fighting back as well as some danger and of course, a happily ever after。 。。。more

This was everything I expect from a KJ Charles novel - some action and intrigue, strong characters that are beautiful for themselves (not necessarily in looks), family drama, bad guys, and slightly amoral ones with good hearts, plus a wonderful romance。I loved Joss and Gareth!

Chapters 23-24 were very long and very stressful, but Gareth made up for it by being a bad bitch。 Plus their relationship was actually the sweetest thing I’ve ever read。 *Spoiler*I thought he was gonna be like noooo don’t shoot him but he was like no please shoot him and god that was a glorious moment for me。 I will say the narrator was QUESTIONABLE

Tragically disappointing! It's exciting to see K。J。 Charles traditionally published, and the package is very nice, but this was on the duller side and I know Charles can do better。 The enemies-to- part of the plot is resolved too quickly, leaving the relationship tensionless and most of the page count devoted to various not terribly engaging Kentish smuggling power-plays。 Charles' side characters are usually as well-drawn as her leads, but I kept waiting for, say, Joss and Gareth's sisters to be Tragically disappointing! I enjoyed holding this in my hands as a physical object more than I enjoyed reading it。 。。。more

I don’t know how else to express it, but KJ will really paint a full, real universe in a world the size of a pocket。 I devoured her catalogue in late 2021 and thought she could do no wrong—glad to see I’m still correct。

Things weren’t quite fleshed out enough within the relationships with supporting characters but this was still a super fun time。 I’m excited to pick up the second book following Luke and I hope and old Joss and Gareth pop up。 Also can there be a third book in this series that’s a sapphic romance staring Sophie? I just think K J Charles should give me some sapphic romance as a treat。

Fast fun read, nothing particularly shocking。 I tend to prefer my romance novels with more plot anyway。

Do you want a queer period romance that is ACTUALLY spicy and romantic, with a fun plot to boot? This is the one for you。

I NEED the next book immediately。 I got adventure, I got sex, I got communication, and conflict founded on character flaws and growth needed from both characters in order to further their relationship in a more trusting manner。 And because I listened to the audiobook, I sometimes got funny voices。 It was tense, it was heartfelt, it was saucy, and I loved every moment of it。*review copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

K。J。 Charles is a fantastic writer。 I could see the natural setting of this story, and feel the squish of the ground。 If I were in 10th grade English, I’d write about how the marsh was another character。 When I think about this book, it’s about the main characters and their families, the naturalist bits, and some of the dramatic action。 I struggle to remember the romance。 It was there, and important, but it was not white hot and attention grabbing。 I’m not sure where Charles is going as an autho K。J。 Charles is a fantastic writer。 I could see the natural setting of this story, and feel the squish of the ground。 If I were in 10th grade English, I’d write about how the marsh was another character。 When I think about this book, it’s about the main characters and their families, the naturalist bits, and some of the dramatic action。 I struggle to remember the romance。 It was there, and important, but it was not white hot and attention grabbing。 I’m not sure where Charles is going as an author, but it feels like she’s go one foot out of the romance genre with this one。 Obvs, this will not change that I read her new books as soon as I can get my hands on one。Thanks to NetGalley for the arc a few months ago! 。。。more

I love everything about it except the family drama。 Good God, most of their family were awful。 Luckily, things moved along at a good pace, so what aggravated me soon passed。On another note, Pagan D'Aumesty, Earl of Oxney's brother, is HILARIOUS!!! I loved this one! It was a bit uneven for me at first so I had to come back to this when I was in a different mood, but it’s the kind of book that grows on you。 This is the historical romance about a smuggler’s ring on Romney Marsh that I didn’t know I needed。 Gareth Ingles, abandoned by his father and scorned by the uncle who raised him, suddenly inherits a baronet from his father upon his unexpected death - along with a whole host of family secrets。But turns out he’s living just a mile away fr I loved this one! Bridgerton meets Poldark is the perfect description。 Joss is definitely Poldark and Gareth and Joss’ steamy relationship is definitely Bridgertonish。 Loved the way that their relationship was so tender and passionate。 The issues they had with communications between each other and the obstacles they encountered in Regency England added to the intrigue of the plot。 One of my favorite characters had to be Catherine and her live and let live attitude and the support she gave this lovely couple。 Will Bridgerton meets Poldark is the perfect description。 Joss is definitely Poldark and Gareth and Joss’ steamy relationship is definitely Bridgertonish。 Loved the way that their relationship was so tender and passionate。 The issues they had with communications between each other and the obstacles they encountered in Regency England added to the intrigue of the plot。 One of my favorite characters had to be Catherine and her live and let live attitude and the support she gave this lovely couple。 Will definitely be reading more by this author。 。。。more

I usually do not read HR, but KJC pulled me in。 I loved the story, especially the main characters。 Joss and Sir Gareth。 They were certainly from different worlds, but they were exactly what each other needed。 Together they fought not only with their families, but the bad guys too。 There are secrets, lies and family drama。 The last 25% was tense and I didn’t want to move。 All in all, I would give 4 stars for the story and 5 stars for the narration。

Yet another KJ Charles win! Utterly delightful romance, and I loved learning about the history of Romney marsh (huge fan of marshes)。 Looking forward to the next one!

It’s not too often that I feel myself tearing up with how much I adore a book, but here we are。 This was so beyond incredible I feel that I could write an entire essay on every aspect I loved, and it would do it no justice。I think the best way to describe it is that it’s a comforting read。 Cozy, taking its time to build, painfully romantic but still entertaining。 I love KJC’s efforts into researching the Marsh, and her descriptions and history lessons that had me, on the other side of the world, It’s not too often that I feel myself tearing up with how much I adore a book, but here we are。 This was so beyond incredible I feel that I could write an entire essay on every aspect I loved, and it would do it no justice。I think the best way to describe it is that it’s a comforting read。 Cozy, taking its time to build, painfully romantic but still entertaining。 I love KJC’s efforts into researching the Marsh, and her descriptions and history lessons that had me, on the other side of the world, wishing I could visit this place。 There’s so much love from this author for writing historicals that are tightly connected to the place and time they are set in, with characters who hold real opinions and feel as if they’re real people, not just ideas set against a backdrop。 Joss Doomsday has my entire heart, but so does Gareth。 I’m not always the biggest fan of hook up secret identities type of set ups, but it was done wonderfully here, and did its part to build tension and have me kicking my feet waiting for them to get together again。 I love their individual characters arcs, and how they connected in conflicts that held my interest just as much as the romance。 Maybe this won’t be as groundbreaking of a read for most people, but it is perfectly what I waited with bathed breath when we first heard of this book。 I can’t wait for when the next one comes out。 。。。more

I burst down the doors of my local bookstore the day this thing dropped, and boy, was it worth it。Oof, I just thought this was really well done。 A relationship dynamic that just fell into place by how compatible the main characters were。 I craved every interaction they had。 I loved how honorable and protective Gareth is。 And, JOSS。 Sweet, sweet JOSS。 What a bean。 He thinks logically, and tries to do whatever he can to resolve situation that fully considers the true well-being of the people that I burst down the doors of my local bookstore the day this thing dropped, and boy, was it worth it。Oof, I just thought this was really well done。 A relationship dynamic that just fell into place by how compatible the main characters were。 I craved every interaction they had。 I loved how honorable and protective Gareth is。 And, JOSS。 Sweet, sweet JOSS。 What a bean。 He thinks logically, and tries to do whatever he can to resolve situation that fully considers the true well-being of the people that he loves。 He has a sense of humor, and has no problem with admitting his own wrongdoings。 He has an open heart, and takes genuine interest in Gareth’s naturalist hobbies even though he thinks it's goofy。I felt the plot had a well good bit of intrigue, to the point where I really did have to pause, go back, and think through what the hell was going on。 But in the end, it made sense。 There was nothing far-fetched whatsoever about the mystery and how the truths are uncovered。 I also found several side characters (Luke, Sophy, and Catherine) to be likable, admirable and brave。 Especially Luke。 Such a brave kid。 I love how he and Gareth take up a father-and-son relationship。 Very excited to read his book, though I’m confused about him dating a D’Aumnesty since the families are supposed to be related somehow?? Idk, but I trust KJ, lol。 And I want to see Gareth and Joss in the future all in love and settled, so。 Yeah。In short, I really liked this。 Fully to be expected with any story KJ Charles touches。 。。。more
